Welcome to OREA’s new Tennessee K-12 Education Portal. This portal includes four interactive data resources and provides a variety of data on schools and school districts in Tennessee. Data for public and non-public schools can be filtered in the maps and dashboards to provide more detailed information.

Public schools

Data for public schools can be viewed for the latest school year available (2021-22) by clicking on the red “Mapping Tennessee Education – Public Schools” box. To view data for multiple past years, click on the blue “K-12 Dashboard – Public Schools”

“Mapping Tennessee Education – Public school” data includes:
-          The number of schools, classrooms, and students;
-          student demographics (e.g., special education, economically disadvantaged, and English learners); and
-          salary averages for teachers, principals, and other positions.

Filter data by school, school district, and state legislative district (House and Senate)
Click on “Filter by School District” in the box above the map to begin. Once a district is selected, you may filter by school within the selected district.

To filter by legislative district, begin by clicking on “Filter by House District” or “Filter by Senate District.” After making this selection, you may filter by school district and school by clicking on the appropriate boxes above the map. Please note that some state legislative districts cover more than one school district or only part of a single school district. When selecting a legislative district, you will also need to also select a school district (if applicable) to see the district-level data for the selected school district.

Note: Virtual schools are counted in the total number of schools for a district (total count in the top, left corner of the map). Since virtual schools do not have a physical school building, they are not reflected in the school or classroom totals (right column of the map).

Navigating the K-12 Dashboard
Use the small arrows at the bottom of the page (in the lower left corner) to navigate the K-12 Dashboard. There are six separate pages of information available through the K-12 Dashboard.

-          District demographics
-          High school graduates
-          Degree attainment
-          Salaries and personnel
-          State & local revenues
-          School buildings

The dashboard displays data by school district. Use the “Select district” drop-down menu in the top left corner to display data for a specific district.

Non-public schools

Data for non-public schools can be viewed for the latest school year available (2021-22) by clicking on the red “Mapping Tennessee Education – Non-Public Schools” box. To view data for multiple past years, click on the blue “K-12 Dashboard – Non-Public Schools”

Non-public school data includes:
-          the grades served and the total number of students and teachers by non-public school;
-          school category, accrediting association, and profit/non-profit status by non-public school; and
-          contact information for each non-public school.

Data limitations
Most data in the interactive resources is self-reported by school districts or non-public schools. Totals are not independently verified by state agencies or the Comptroller’s Office and are dependent on schools and/or school districts correctly and completely filling out requested information. In the Mapping Tennessee Education resources, data that was unavailable or not reported is represented by a zero (0). When no filters are applied, zeros (0) will be shown for totals that are not available at the state level. Additionally, student totals were suppressed if there were fewer than 10 students in a given category. Data suppression is used to protect student identities and personal information by removing select totals. In this case of data suppression, nine (9) is used to represent the maximum number of possible students for the given category.
